Chittagong, officially known as Chattogram, is a major port city in southeastern Bangladesh, located near the Bay of Bengal and the mouth of the Karnaphuli River. It is an important commercial center, with the Port of Chattogram serving as the country's principal seaport. The city combines busy urban districts with nearby hills, rivers, and coastal landscapes. Its location also makes it a gateway to the Chittagong Hill Tracts and the beaches of southeastern Bangladesh. Chittagong's streets, markets, mosques, temples, and waterfront areas reflect the city's long-standing role as a meeting point for different communities and trading traditions.

Chittagong has a diverse cultural identity shaped by Bengali traditions, maritime commerce, and communities with different religious backgrounds. The city contains important religious sites such as the Anderkilla Shahi Jame Mosque, one of its notable historic mosques, and the Chandanpura Mosque, recognized for its colorful architectural details. Buddhist and Hindu communities also contribute to the city's cultural landscape. Chittagong's connection with the sea is reflected in local festivals, fishing traditions, boatbuilding, and markets. The city's traditional food culture includes Bengali rice dishes, fish preparations, seafood, and regional specialties influenced by the coastal setting.

The city and its surroundings offer several notable places to explore. Foy's Lake is a man-made lake surrounded by wooded hills and recreational areas, while the nearby Batali Hill provides elevated views over the urban landscape. Patenga Beach lies near the mouth of the Karnaphuli River, where the river meets the Bay of Bengal and ships can be seen moving along the coastal waters. The Ethnological Museum presents information about the Indigenous peoples of Bangladesh, including communities from the country's southeastern hill regions. Beyond the city, the Chittagong Hill Tracts provide a landscape of forested hills, valleys, rivers, and Indigenous communities.

Chittagong's cuisine is strongly connected to fish and seafood, with dishes featuring hilsa, pomfret, shrimp, and other species from the rivers and Bay of Bengal. Mezban is a particularly well-known Chittagong culinary tradition, centered on a large communal feast where beef and rice are commonly served. Kala bhuna, a slow-cooked beef dish associated with the region, is another local specialty. The city's markets also offer dried fish, spices, tropical fruits, and other ingredients from southeastern Bangladesh. Its major seaport, diverse religious heritage, coastal food traditions, and proximity to hill and beach landscapes make Chittagong an important regional center.
