Hermanus is a coastal town in the Western Cape, set along Walker Bay between the Kleinrivier Mountains and the Atlantic Ocean. It is best known for its land-based whale watching, with southern right whales regularly entering the sheltered waters of the bay. The town combines a compact centre with a long coastal cliff path, beaches, coves, and residential areas extending along the shoreline. Its position within the Cape Whale Coast also places Hermanus near vineyards, mountain landscapes, fynbos habitats, and other coastal communities of the Overberg region.

Hermanus has a strong connection to the sea and to the fishing communities that shaped its early local identity. The Old Harbour Museum preserves this heritage through a collection of historic fishing boats, buildings, and exhibits. The town is also associated with the Whale Crier, who uses a kelp horn to announce whale sightings during the whale-watching season. Local culture extends into the surrounding Overberg, where Cape Malay, Khoisan, farming, fishing, and winemaking traditions have contributed to the region’s food, crafts, and community life.

The Hermanus Cliff Path follows the shoreline for many kilometres, providing access to coastal viewpoints and areas where whales can sometimes be observed close to land. Grotto Beach is the town’s largest Blue Flag beach, while Fernkloof Nature Reserve protects mountain slopes above Hermanus and contains extensive Cape fynbos. The reserve has hundreds of plant species and a network of hiking trails. Walker Bay also supports marine life including dolphins and seals, while boat-based whale watching provides another way to observe southern right whales and other species in the bay.

Hermanus has a strong food culture shaped by its coastal location and nearby agricultural areas. Fresh seafood, locally produced cheeses, olives, fruit, and wines from the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley feature prominently in restaurants and farm-based food experiences. The region is particularly associated with cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines. A distinctive local feature is the Hermanus Whale Festival, which combines marine conservation activities, environmental education, and community events. The town’s coastal path also functions as an outdoor art space, with sculptures and other works placed along sections of the shoreline.
